Dental Crowns in Trenton, Ontario
When teeth are severely decayed, worn down, or damaged, one of the best ways to treat it with dental crowns. Dental crowns, or dental caps, are a type of dental restoration that can be used for cosmetic and restorative purposes. Besides improving the appearance of stained, chipped, or damaged teeth, crowns can restore teeth that are decayed or cracked. Crowns offer high amounts of strength, durability, and protection.
Compared to other dental restorations, like bonded fillings, porcelain inlays / onlays, dental crowns cover entire tooth above the gumline. In comparison, most other restorations only treat a specific portion of the tooth, which makes crowns ideal for treating teeth that are more heavily decayed or traumatized. Once placed over the tooth’s structure, a crown effectively becomes the tooth’s new outer surface.
Crowns can be used for a wide variety of reasons including:
- Replacing a large filling.
- Strengthening a weakened tooth.
- Repairing a broken tooth.
- Covering a tooth that has received a root canal.
- Covering a tooth that is stained or misshaped.
- Covering a dental implant.
Crowns can come in a variety of materials, such as ceramic, porcelain, gold alloy, or a mixture of the substances. Because each type of crown has its advantages and disadvantages, you should consult your dentist to determine which type of crown is best for your situation.
It usually requires two appointments to place a crown. During your first appointment, the dentist will check to ensure that your tooth is strong enough to support a crown. If it is, the tooth is prepared so that it can be placed with a crown. A tooth impression is taken and sent to a dental lab where your dental crown is made. You will be placed with a temporary crown to protect your tooth until your permanent crown is ready. Once your permanent crown is ready, you will return to our office, the temporary crown is taken off, and the permanent one is attached with a dental adhesive.
